Mini-split heat pumps are an efficient heating and cooling option for Massachusetts homeowners… when they’re installed and operated properly.

Here are three common heat pump mistakes that can affect system efficiency and lead to higher energy bills.

Mistake #1: Adjusting Your Thermostat Too Often

Heat pumps operate most efficiently and effectively when they can run continuously, adjusting output on their own to maintain your set temperature.

Frequently turning your mini-split on and off, or constantly adjusting the temperature on your thermostat, forces the system to work harder to reach new set points rather than making small, efficient adjustments over time. Instead, set your system to a comfortable temperature and leave it there.

Of course, adjusting your thermostat is okay when needed. For instance, if a spare room isn’t in use, you can turn the mini-split’s temperature down or off and bring it back up when guests arrive.

The key to efficient operation is avoiding frequent temperature changes throughout the day.

Mistake #2: Choosing an Oversized System

An oversized heat pump system is one of the most common causes of inefficiency and discomfort in New England homes. It’s easy to assume a bigger system is a safe choice, especially for heating. When it comes to HVAC, however, bigger is rarely better.

As discussed, heat pumps are designed to run continuously. When a system is too large for the space it’s meant to condition, the system will reach the set temperature too quickly and shut off before completing a full cycle.

This is called “short-cycling” and leads to increased energy use, added wear on components, and reduced comfort. Short-cycling also prevents proper dehumidification, often leaving the space feeling cool but damp in the summer.

That’s why it’s important not to choose a system simply because it’s larger. Proper sizing, typically based on a Manual J calculation, ensures your system is designed for your home’s actual needs.

Mistake #3: Skipping Regular Maintenance

Skipping regular maintenance is another common mistake that negatively affects mini-split efficiency and system lifespan.

As a rule of thumb, heating and cooling systems should receive routine maintenance yearly by professional HVAC technicians experienced with the equipment.

We recommend scheduling mini-split maintenance in the spring, when temperatures are above 50°F. This allows technicians to properly evaluate heating and cooling performance.

Mini-splits also require routine filter cleaning, which homeowners can easily do themselves. Simply remove the filter and rinse it in a sink or with a hose using lukewarm water. A good starting point is to check your filter every three months and adjust based on how quickly it collects dust and debris.

And if you have pets, you may find yourself cleaning filters a bit more often—we certainly do!

If your mini-split isn’t delivering the comfort and efficiency it should, it’s worth taking a closer look at thermostat use, system sizing, and system maintenance.
