Heat pumps work by transferring heat to provide both heating and cooling to a space. During hot days, they remove heat from the indoor air and release it outside, circulating conditioned, cool air back into your home. Heat exists in the air even when it’s very cold. During colder months, heat pumps extract heat from the outdoor air and transfer it indoors to warm your home. Because heat pumps transfer heat opposed to producing it, they can be more efficient than traditional heating sources such as electric resistance and oil systems.
Central and ductless mini-split heat pumps both provide efficient heating and cooling through one system, but they differ in how they distribute air. Central heat pump systems use ductwork to move conditioned air throughout a home, while ductless mini-splits operate without ducts, providing room-by-room comfort through individual indoor units.
