Great news for Massachusetts homeowners with heat pumps! Residential customers serviced by National Grid, Eversource and Unitil may now qualify for Massachusetts Heat Pump Electrical Rates. The Heat Pump Electrical Rates are reduced winter electricity rates designed to make efficient electric heating even more affordable.
The new Heat Pump Rates apply only during the heating season and are available to both homeowners and renters who use heat pumps for whole-home or partial-home heating. Each utility has its own enrollment process and information around eligibility requirements, which we outline below.

National Grid’s Heat Pump Rate offers a lower electricity distribution rate for residential customers who use heat pumps for home heating. This lower distribution rate is applied to all electricity usage between November 1st and April 30th — not just electricity consumed by your heat pump system.
National Grid estimates residential customers with R-1 electric accounts could save between $70 and $141 per month in the winter, based on average electricity usage.
The Heat Pump rate is available to National Grid residential account customers who use heat pumps to heat in partial or in full. This includes:
The following are not eligible for the National Grid Heat Pump Rate
If you are a National Grid residential electrical customer who has installed heat pumps in 2019 or later utilizing the Mass Save® program, National Grid may automatically enroll you for the Heat Pump Rate.
If your heat pump system was installed before 2019, under a different account or without Mass Save® participation, you can enroll online through National Grid’s website, linked here.
To enroll in National Grid’s Heat Pump Rate, you must provide the following information:

“You are currently enrolled in the Heat Pump Rate, which provides a lower distribution charge during the winter heating season. The reduced rate is applied from November through April kWh usage and is included in the distribution charge line item under the Delivery Services section of your bill’.
National Grid asks customers to allow 1-2 billing cycles for the new rate to appear.
Eversource’s residential Heat Pump Rate provides reduced electric distribution and transmission rates per kWh from November 1 to April 30. The discount applies to all electricity used during the heating season, even if your heat pump does not heat the entire home.
Eversource’s Heat Pump rate is available to customers with a residential account who use heat pumps for any amount of heating. This includes:

Like National Grid’s Heat Pump Rate, Eversource residential customers who utilized the Mass Save® program to install heat pumps in 2019 or later, will be automatically enrolled at the rate beginning November 1, 2025. Those automatically enrolled should have received notification of their enrollment.
Residential Eversource customers who heat with heat pumps installed prior to 2019 or did not utilize the Mass Save ® program, or for renters with a R-1 or R-2 Eversource account that heat with heat pumps must enroll on their own.

Unitil offers a discounted distribution rate for residential electric customers who use heat pumps for heating between November 1 and April 30.
These savings apply to all electricity consumed during the billing period, helping homeowners and renters lower their winter heating costs.
To qualify for Unitil’s Heat Pump Rate, customers must have one or more heat pumps used for home heating and an active R-1 or R-2 residential Unitil electric account. (Cooling-only heat pumps and heat pump water heaters are not eligible.)
Customers with an R-2 Residential Assistance account qualify for a separate R-2 Heat Pump Rate. Renters who have their own Unitil residential electric account and use heat pumps for heating also qualify.
Commercial customers are not eligible for the Heat Pump Rate.
Unitil Customers who installed qualifying heat pump systems through Mass Save® (2019 or later) are automatically enrolled in Unitil’s Heat Pump Rate.
