As a family-owned business based in Leominster, we know home improvement projects can quickly become overwhelming. With so much conflicting information out there, we’ve created a homeowner’s guide to heat pump projects for Leominster residents and neighbors in surrounding Massachusetts towns.

1) Finding Credible Heat Pump Contractors

The first step in your project is to meet with local contractors to discuss system design options and pricing. When evaluating potential contractors, consider the following factors:

Check Reviews & Ask Around

When deciding on a service, it’s always helpful to check reviews and ask about others’ experiences. A great place to start is by reading online reviews and asking your neighbors, friends or family.

Here are a few things to look for:

  • Patterns in both positive and negative reviews
  • How contractors respond to customer concerns
  • Feedback specific to heat pump installations (not just broad HVAC, electrical or plumbing services)

Verify Credentials

There are a lot of contractors offering heat pump services, but not all are the same. A great way to help narrow down your options is by comparing credentials, qualifications and overall presence. Important credentials to note:

  • Member of the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN): Make sure your contractor is part of the Mass Save Heat Pump Installer Network. This is required for you to qualify for Mass Save rebates and, in our opinion, is a bare minimum certification for a heat pump installer.
  • Licensed Dealer/Authorized Equipment Contractor: Look for contractors certified by the equipment manufacturers they install (e.g., Mitsubishi Diamond Elite or Bosch Accredited). These certifications ensure proper training and can extend equipment warranties.
  • Company Reputation & Support: Choose a company with a solid track record. Will they be around for future maintenance? Do they offer more than just the state-required 1-year labor warranty?
  • Team Experience & Training: Ask about the training and qualifications of not only the installers, but also your salesperson! Do they truly understand heat pump design and operation, or was your salesperson thrown into the field? A well-trained team means better service and system performance

Evaluate Their Communication & Presentation

Is the contractor responsive, knowledgeable and professional? A company’s website, social media and initial communications can offer a glimpse into their customer service approach and familiarity with heat pump projects in particular.

2) Comparing Your Heat Pump Options

Once you’ve reached out to qualified contractors for an initial proposal, it’s time to evaluate your options! No matter the contractor you work with, you should have options and the pros and cons of each should be made clear to you by the contactor,

Let’s give a recap of a few factors that can help you determine which proposal to go with (if any).

Comparing Types of Heat Pumps for Leominster Homes

When reviewing heat pump proposals, your contractor should offer options suited to your home’s layout, comfort needs and budget. They should be able to explain the benefits and drawbacks of various design and equipment choices, helping you make the best decision for your home.

Generally, two types of heat pump systems will be discussed:

Ducted Central Heat Pumps: Ideal for homes with existing ductwork, central heat pump systems deliver whole-home heating and cooling through a centralized air handler, distributing conditioned air via ducts. They’re a great option for homeowners replacing traditional HVAC systems or seeking a seamless, integrated solution. If your home currently lacks ductwork, a qualified contractor may still be able to add ductwork to your home.

Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps: Perfect for homes without ductwork or areas with specific heating and cooling needs- such as additions, basements, attics or garages- mini-split heat pumps use indoor units mounted on the wall, floor or ceiling, all connected to a single outdoor condenser.

It’s helpful to ensure your contractor is experienced with both ductless mini-split and central heat pumps. Less experience with one option may limit your available choices and can speak to the overall expertise of the contractor. Similarly, contractors skilled in both can also recommend hybrid solutions, like combining ducted systems for main areas with ductless units for hard-to-reach spaces.

Proper System Design Matters

Proper heat pump sizing is crucial for efficiency. A Manual J calculation should be performed to determine your home’s heating and cooling needs based on local weather conditions. We recommend having your contractor complete this calculation on-site for accuracy. If installing a central heat pump or ductwork, a Manual D calculation is also necessary.

Be cautious of contractors who outsource this process, as it may lead to errors and poor system design.

Your contractor should also ask several detailed questions about your comfort preferences, long-term goals and how you use your home to design a heat pump system tailored to your unique needs and preferences.

By signing up, you are not just keeping your home comfortable- you are protecting your investment, improving system efficiency, and avoiding expensive, unexpected repairs.

Equipment Qualities & Offered Warranties

The quality and type of equipment matter. Ask your contractor about their equipment choices, the manufacturer’s reputation, warranty details and failure rates. Beware of companies offering ‘big store’ brands (ie Home Depot, Amazon).

Your contractor should be informed of the type of equipment they are proposing and have solid reasoning for installing it in your home

3) Explore Heat Pump Energy Incentives Available to Leominster Homeowners

Several energy incentive programs are available to Massachusetts residents, depending on your utility provider.

Most Leominster homeowners can qualify for the Mass Save program and IRA Federal Tax Credits. A qualified contractor should be well-versed in these incentives and explain them to you in detail.

Mass Save Rebates for Leominster Homeowners: Leominster homeowners typically qualify for up to $10,000 in rebates, or up to $16,000 if income eligible. The Mass Save HEAT Loan offers 0% financing for up to $25,000 over seven years (as of May 5, 2025). Be sure to ask if the contractor assists with the rebate paperwork, as the process can be cumbersome.

Not based in Leominster?  You may still be eligible for Mass Save rebates or rebates through town-specific municipal energy incentive programs.

IRA Federal Tax Credits:  Heat pump installations may qualify for up to $2,000 in federal tax credits per year, with no lifetime limit. For example, installing a heat pump in 2025 may qualify you for a $2,000 tax credit, and installing another in 2026 may qualify you for an additional $2,000. Related services like electrical upgrades or duct sealing may also qualify for further tax credits. Your contractor should walk you through these incentives.

Choosing the right contractor is crucial for ensuring your heat pump system delivers optimal comfort, efficiency and reliability. We urge you to ask lots of questions and avoid making rushed decisions. Your contractor should help you feel confident and supported when navigating your heat pump project!
