Project Overview

Sunrooms add natural light and warmth to a home, but maintaining year-round comfort in these glass-filled spaces can be challenging.  Having heat pumps previously installed throughout their home, the Westminster, Massachusetts homeowners were already familiar with the advantages of having heat pumps and wondered if they could add one to their sunroom for year-round use. 

Jay Moody HVAC designed and installed a Mitsubishi ductless mini-split heat pump in the sunroom, opening up the space for winter use. 

The Comfort Challenges

With a glass roof and two glass walls connected to an open concept kitchen, the sunroom was prone to temperature extremes. This included overheating in the summer and losing warmth quickly in the winter. The home’s existing heating and cooling system did not extend into this area effectively, leaving the room uncomfortable for much of the year. The homeowners wanted a quiet, efficient solution that could provide both heating and cooling without altering the sunroom’s open design.

The homeowners sought a ductless cooling/heating solution that would resolve these challenges without the need for ductwork. 

The Solution

To meet these needs, Jay Moody HVAC installed a Mitsubishi wall-mounted ductless mini-split system. The system was sized slightly larger than standard to offset the heat loss and gain caused by glass construction. The ductless heat pump provides both heating and cooling, offering reliable comfort through every new england season. 

The ductless system consisted of one white indoor unit mounted to the room’s brick wall, and a single-zone exterior unit positioned under an overhang on the backside of the home.

Project Execution

At Jay Moody HVAC, each installation is designed with the homeowner’s specific space and comfort goals in mind. For this Westminster project, our team worked hand-in-hand with the homeowners to develop the ideal heating and cooling solution for their sunroom. From the first consultation to the final walkthrough, every step was handled with care to provide a smooth and worry-free experience. The process included the following stages:

  • In-Home Consultation: The Westminster homeowners had previously worked with Jay Moody HVAC for maintenance on their existing mini-splits. When it came time to improve their sunroom, they contacted our team for design and installation. A degreed mechanical engineer conducted a Manual J Calculation to determine the best size and placement. Multiple options were reviewed, and our engineer clearly explained each system’s benefits and limitations, taking into account the energy challenges of a mostly glass room. 
  • Heat Pump Installation: Before beginning the installation, the lead technician met with the homeowners to confirm system placement, explain the installation process and review the project’s one-day timeline. Throughout the installation, Jay Moody HVAC technicians worked neatly and respectfully. They wore shoe covers inside, maintained a clean workspace and made sure the system was installed with care and precision. While all heat pump installation work was completed by trained HVAC technicians with vast experience installing Mitsubishi mini-splits, the project’s electrical work was completed by Jay Moody HVAC’s licensed electrical team.

  • Warranties & Energy Incentives:  As a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, Jay Moody HVAC offers an extended 12-year equipment warranty on Mitsubishi systems we install. This is in addition to Jay Moody HVAC’s 2 year workmanship warranty. All equipment is registered on behalf of the homeowner for added convenience and peace of mind. This Westminster mini-split installation also qualified for a $2,000 Federal Heat Pump Tax Credit, helping the homeowners save money while improving comfort.
