Project Overview

This 1980s home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, lacked the ductwork required for traditional central air conditioning- a common challenge for many New England homes. Seeking a more energy-efficient and aesthetically pleasing cooling option, the homeowners turned to Jay Moody HVAC for a ductless heat pump solution that could keep the home comfortable during hot Massachusetts summers, especially when their grandchildren visited.

Jay Moody HVAC installed a high-efficiency Mitsubishi ductless mini-split heat pump system designed to provide cooling during warmer seasons and supplemental heating when the weather is cold. The new heat pump installation offers zoned climate control, efficient heating/cooling and a sleek, low-profile appearance that blends seamlessly into the home’s interior.

The Challenge

While the Shrewsbury homeowners were satisfied with their existing heating system, Massachusetts summers left the home hot and uncomfortable. Because the home lacked ductwork, installing a central AC system would have required extensive renovations and wasn’t a practical or cost-effective solution for the home.

The homeowners sought a comfort solution that would efficiently cool frequently used areas, such as the bedrooms and main living space, while preserving the home’s aesthetics. Since some bedrooms aren’t used year-round, the homeowners also wanted zoned temperature control to efficiently heat and cool the rooms in use, helping reduce energy costs while maintaining comfort where it mattered most.

The Design

Jay Moody HVAC designed an efficient 5-zone ductless Mitsubishi heat pump system to enhance indoor comfort and temperature control, all while preserving the home’s aesthetics.

Mitsubishi was the equipment of choice due to their quiet operation, energy efficiency and sleek look. The new 5-zone system is designed to deliver reliable cooling and supplemental heating to the home’s four bedrooms and the downstairs play/living area.

5-Zone System

The 5-zone ductless system consists of a single multi-zone outdoor condenser connected to 5 indoor mini-split units: one wall unit to cover the cooling requirements of the in the downstairs play/living area, and one ceiling cassette located in each of the four upstairs bedrooms.

The 5-zone ductless heat pump system features a single multi-zone outdoor condenser connected to five indoor units: one wall-mounted mini-split in the downstairs play and living area, and four ceiling cassette units—one in each of the upstairs bedrooms.

This setup delivers efficient, zoned cooling throughout the home while preserving aesthetics and minimizing disruption. It also allows the Shrewsbury homeowners to retain their existing heating system as the primary heat source, with the heat pump providing supplemental heating in colder months to improve overall energy efficiency and comfort.

In addition to efficient cooling, this design allows the Shrewsbury homeowners to continue using their existing heating system as the main heating source while providing supplemental heat to increase overall efficiency during the cold months and adds quiet and efficient cooling when it’s hot.

Project Execution

Jay Moody HVAC worked closely with the homeowners to deliver a seamless experience, from the initial in-home consultation to filing rebate and warranty paperwork.

  • In-Home Consultation: The project started with an initial consultation led by Jay Moody HVAC engineer & Director of Operations, Paul Sharkey. At this time, Paul thoroughly assessed the home’s layout and talked with the homeowners to better understand their unique needs and comfort preferences. For accurate sizing, Paul conducted a Manual J calculation while in-home to ensure the proposed system meets the home’s heating and cooling loads.

Before the proposal was accepted, Jay Moody HVAC’s team was able to answer all of the homeowners’ questions, carefully crafting the perfect system design to meet their unique needs.

  • Installation: The installation began with an initial walkthrough to go over the details on the installation again and outline each step of the process with the homeowners. This provided an opportunity to address any last-minute questions and introduce the Jay Moody HVAC team. Throughout the installation, Jay Moody HVAC prioritized maintaining a clean environment, using shoe covers indoors and placing carpet runners throughout the home to protect the floors. Outside, the refrigerant lines were strategically placed to blend in with the home’s gutters and trim to minimize the aesthetic impact of the installation. In addition, all electrical work was handled by Jay Moody’s licensed electrical team, making sure the installation met the highest safety and quality standards.
  • Rebates & Warranty Paperwork: As a SELCO electric customer, the Shrewsbury homeowners qualified for a partial-home heat pump rebate through the NextZero program as well as a Federal Tax Credit Through the Inflation Reduction Act. Jay Moody HVAC helped the customers navigate the rebate application, submitting necessary paperwork on their behalf. Additionally, Jay Moody HVAC filed the Mitsubishi warranty paperwork, offering peace-of-mind ensuring the system is backed by a 12-year equipment warranty in addition to Jay Moody HVAC’s labor warranty period.

With their new Mitsubishi ductless heat pump system, the Shrewsbury homeowners now enjoy year-round comfort. The home’s new room-by-room temperature control, including efficient cooling, is especially beneficial during visits with the grandkids, keeping everyone in the home comfortable no matter the season.
