A 1964 ranch home in Maynard, Massachusetts now enjoys efficient, year-round comfort thanks to a whole-home ductless (mini-split) heat pump system installed by Jay Moody HVAC. The new system replaced two outdated mini-splits and an aging gas heating system, creating an all-electric solution that integrates seamlessly with the homeowner’s solar panels. The project also qualified for Mass Save® whole-home rebates and federal tax credits.

The homeowners initially reached out to replace two 20-year-old Fujitsu mini-splits that only cooled limited areas of the home. Without ductwork, the home had no centralized cooling method and relied on a gas heating system that couldn’t take advantage of their solar energy and was losing efficiency.
While the homeowners planned to replace their old mini-split units, they were open to exploring options that could improve both comfort and energy performance throughout the home.
To address the home’s challenges and future goals, Jay Moody HVAC’s owner and lead engineer, Leo Sharkey, designed a 4-zone Bryant Ductless heat pump system to provide efficient cooling and heating to the entire home.
The ductless heat pump system consists of two multi-zone condensers and four wall-mounted units to cover all four zones of the home.
The first multi-zone outdoor condenser is mounted on a pad and stand, and located at the left side of the home. It serves two key areas:
Kitchen/Sitting Area: A wall-mounted Bryant Ductless mini-split unit was positioned on the garage exterior wall to condition the open-concept kitchen and sitting area space of the home.
Living Room: A separate wall-mounted ductless indoor unit was installed on the living room’s right interior wall to condition the living area, providing accurate cooling and heating to the space.
The second multi-zone condenser is located on the right side of the home, also on a pad and stand, and serves the following areas:
Primary Bedroom: For optimal comfort and aesthetics, the primary bedroom’s heating and cooling requirements are covered by a wall-mounted mini-split located on the right exterior wall of the bedroom.
Secondary Bedroom: A Bryant Ductless wal-mounted unit was mounted on the secondary bedroom’s right front exterior wall for optimal conditioning of the space.
Jay Moody HVAC worked closely with the homeowners to deliver a seamless experience, from the initial in-home consultation to filing rebate and warranty paperwork.
As a member of the Mass Save® Heat Pump Installer Network (HPIN), Jay Moody HVAC is qualified to install systems that meet Mass Save program standards and qualify for available rebates. The project received a $10,000 Mass Save® Whole-Home Heat Pump Rebate and a Mass Save® HEAT Loan of up to $25,000 with 0% financing for seven years. Most Maynard homeowners are eligible for the Mass Save® program, as local electricity is provided by Eversource, a participating Mass Save® sponsor.
The Jay Moody HVAC team supported the homeowners throughout the entire process, assisting with rebate applications and submitting all necessary paperwork. The system also qualified for a federal tax credit, and the homeowners received clear guidance on how to claim the credit during tax season.
