Project Overview

During one of the hottest summers in recent years, homeowners in Shirley, Massachusetts, sought a more efficient and reliable solution for cooling their home. Their 1938 Modern Colonial, which used a natural gas heating system, lacked the ductwork necessary for central air conditioning. To address this, Jay Moody HVAC worked closely with the homeowners to install wall-mounted Mitsubishi mini-splits in two of the most frequently used and heat-prone rooms, providing relief from the hot weather.

This solution not only enhances comfort during the summer months but offers efficient heating to keep the rooms comfortable year-round. Plus, with the room-by-room design, the Shirley homeowners can continue to add mini-splits to additional spaces in the future!

The Challenge

Without central air conditioning, the homeowners would have to rely on inefficient, cumbersome window AC units to cool their home in the summer. The kitchen/dining area and primary bedroom in particular, were especially hot and uncomfortable in the summer. While window air conditioners could provide short-term relief, they remained inconvenient, bulky and inefficient. Shoulder seasons where Massachusetts weather ranges from warm to cool overnight, make this even more difficult. These were challenges Jay Moody HVAC was tasked with addressing.

Additionally, the homeowners were concerned about the impact of outdoor equipment and piping on the home’s aesthetics.

The Design

To address these concerns, Jay Moody HVAC designed a two-zone Mitsubishi mini-split system. One zone serves the primary bedroom, while the other conditions the dining and kitchen area. Both zones include a wall-mounted mini-split indoor unit, connected to their own individual outdoor condenser. This method allows the homeowners the option to cool one room while they heat another, if ever necessary.

Mitsubishi was selected for its high efficiency, sleek design and humidity control.

To minimize the visual impact outdoors, the lineset for the bedroom unit was routed along the left side of the home, keeping it out of sight from the street. The kitchen unit connects to another condenser located under the back deck, with adequate clearance and drip protection to prevent icing. Linesets were carefully mapped to blend with the home’s exterior for a clean, discreet look.

Project Execution

At Jay Moody HVAC, we tailor every project to the unique needs of each customer, ensuring those needs are met from start to finish. For this home, we collaborated closely with the homeowners to design a customized solution and deliver a seamless, stress-free installation experience. The process included the following steps:

  • In-Home Consultation:

To start the heat pump project, the Shirley homeowners met with Jay Moody HVAC engineer, Paul Sharkey to discuss what they were looking for and explore various system options. During this in-home consultation, the engineer conducted a manual J calculation to determine the necessary cooling and heating requirements of the individual rooms and home as a whole. With this information, in addition to what was relayed by the homeowners, the engineer was able to provide several options to walk through with the homeowners.

Upon further discussion, the homeowners chose to go with the two-zone Mitsubishi system discussed, with the option to add more mini-splits in the future.

  • Installation:

As with every project, our mini-split installation began with a walkthrough led by the HVAC install technician and the homeowner. This step makes certain the schedule is clear, expectations are set and any questions are answered up front. Our team takes pride in delivering top-tier craftsmanship, focusing on precision, detail and maintaining a clean workspace from start to finish. Inside the home, we use carpet runners and protective foot coverings to keep the space spotless throughout the installation.

  • Warranties & Energy Incentives:

As a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, Jay Moody HVAC provides this installation with a 12-year equipment warranty, in addition to our own 2-year workmanship warranty. For added peace of mind, we register all equipment warranties on the homeowner’s behalf at the time of installation.

This mini-split installation also qualified for a $2,000 Federal Tax Credit, helping the homeowner save money while investing in long-term comfort and efficiency.

This Mitsubishi mini-split installation in Shirley, Massachusetts, is a prime example of how ductless heat pumps can transform home comfort one room at a time! By replacing inefficient window air conditioners with a high-efficiency two-zone system, these homeowners now enjoy targeted cooling in the summer, reliable heating in the winter and improved year-round energy efficiency. The discreet design preserves the charm of their 1938 Colonial while providing the flexibility to expand the system in the future.

We’re proud to provide energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions that enhance comfort and preserve the beauty of Massachusetts homes, and we’re grateful for the trust this Shirley family placed in our team!
