Project Overview

This 2002 Single Family Colonial in Gardner, Massachusetts now benefits from efficient dual cooling and heating thanks to its newly installed Mitsubishi ductless heat pump system.

Continue reading to discover how Jay Moody HVAC worked with the homeowner to design and install the perfect whole-home comfort solution, leveraging available heat pump energy incentives along the way!

The Comfort Challenges

Despite being built in 2002, the Gardner home lacked the ductwork needed for centralized cooling. This caused high indoor temperatures and humidity during Massachusetts’ warmer months. During the fall and winter, the home’s oil boiler proved to be an inefficient heating source and was nearing time for replacement.

The homeowners sought a ductless cooling/heating solution that would resolve these challenges without the need for ductwork.

The Design

To address the home’s comfort and efficiency challenges, Jay Moody HVAC designed and installed a 5-Zone Mitsubishi ductless mini-split heat pump system. The new zoned system covers the heating/cooling needs of the entire home.

The 5-Zone system consists of 5 wall-mounted mini-splits connected to one multi-zone condenser. The outdoor condenser is mounted on a pad and stand located at the side of the home, while wall-mounted mini-split units are located in the living room, bakery room and each of the three bedrooms.

Project Execution

At Jay Moody HVAC, we tailor every project to the unique needs of each customer, ensuring those needs are met from start to finish. For this home, we collaborated closely with the homeowners to design a customized solution and deliver a seamless, stress-free installation experience. The process included the following steps:

  • In-Home Consultation: Every Jay Moody HVAC system is designed by degreed mechanical engineers with a deep understanding of HVAC systems and their components. The Gardner project began with an in-home consultation led by one of our engineers. During this visit, the engineer performed a Manual J Calculation, assessing the home’s layout, construction and orientation to design an efficient system tailored to the space.

The homeowner first met with the engineer in 2024 to explore options but decided to pause the project. In 2025, they reconnected to revisit the installation. The same Jay Moody HVAC engineer conducted the second consultation, discussing updates to the homeowner’s goals and reviewing several options, including partial-home and whole-home solutions with alternative ductless brands. The engineer outlined the benefits, potential drawbacks and available energy incentives such as Mass Save rebates.

The goal of every consultation is to design a comfort solution that fits the homeowner’s needs and the unique characteristics of their home. After careful collaboration, the homeowner and engineer finalized the system design and selected the best solution for their space.

  • Installation: Raising the industry standard for craftsmanship begins with clear communication and respect for every home Jay Moody HVAC’s team enters. The installation process started with a detailed walkthrough, where the lead installer worked closely with the Gardner, MA homeowner to confirm equipment locations and review the installation plan step-by-step.

Throughout the project, the installation team carefully maintained a clean, professional workspace, using shoe covers, carpet runners and cleaning up as they worked. Each heat pump component was installed with precision to ensure long-term system performance and reliability.

Once the installation was complete, the lead installer walked the homeowner through their new system, demonstrating how to operate it efficiently and maintain peak performance.

  • Warranties & Energy Incentives: Jay Moody HVAC’s support continues well after installation. Following the project’s completion, our team submitted all equipment warranties on the homeowner’s behalf to ensure full coverage and peace of mind. As a Mitsubishi Diamond Elite Contractor, Jay Moody HVAC provides an extended 12-year equipment warranty on Mitsubishi heat pump systems, offering more than double the protection of the standard 5-year warranty and giving homeowners long-term confidence in their investment.

The Gardner home also qualified for the Mass Save program, and our team guided the homeowner through every step of the process. This included confirming eligibility for the Mass Save HEAT Loan and completing the whole-home rebate application, which Jay Moody HVAC submitted directly for a stress-free experience.

With their new Mitsubishi ductless heat pump system, the Gardner homeowner now enjoys consistent comfort and improved efficiency throughout the year. The system was thoughtfully designed to meet the home’s unique layout and comfort needs while taking advantage of available energy incentives.

From design to installation and post-project support, the process reflects how careful planning and quality craftsmanship can make a meaningful difference in a home’s comfort and energy use.
