Jay Moody HVAC recently completed a whole-home mini-split installation for new customers in Acton, Massachusetts.
Mini-splits are ductless heat pumps, offering efficient, electric-powered dual heating and cooling. In this case study, we’ll take you through the installation process, from the initial system design to the submission of rebate and warranty paperwork.
Free Mini-Split Consultation in Acton
The Acton homeowners contacted Jay Moody HVAC to upgrade their existing partial-home mini-split system to a whole-home system. The homeowner’s goal was to eliminate their fossil fuel-based boiler to a more sustainable and energy efficient system for the entire house.
As members of Mass Save’s Heat Pump Installer Network, Jay Moody HVAC is authorized to design and install systems eligible for Mass Save rebates & financing.
Leo Sharkey, owner and lead sales-engineer, personally visited the homeowners to further discuss what they wanted from their new system. This involved understanding their aesthetic preferences, comfort needs and efficiency goals. Leo also performed a Manual J calculation to ensure the new system would be appropriately sized.
After gaining a clear understanding of the customers’ objectives, Leo leveraged his engineering expertise to design an efficient heat pump system that seamlessly integrated with their home.
Heat Pump System Design
Leo designed a system using Mitsubishi mini-split units for the Acton home, which had no existing ductwork. The design incorporated the home’s existing indoor mini-split units, installed by a previous contractor, but replaced the outdoor condenser with a new multi-zone unit to support the expanded system.
The design included the installation of new mini-split units in two additional bedrooms and the home office.
Additionally, we relocated the existing indoor unit from the kitchen to the living room and installed a more suitable system in the kitchen.
The final heat pump system design meets the home’s entire heating and cooling needs. The upgraded system also qualifies for Mass Save’s whole-home rebate and financing.
System Installation Process
Before the installation began, Jay Moody HVAC sales-engineers went through a system walk-through with the customers and installation team. Walk-throughs help clarify any questions the homeowners may have and outlines the installation process for all those involved.
On the day of installation, the lead technician provided the homeowner with an “Installation Checklist” sheet outlining each step of the installation so the homeowners stayed informed throughout the process.
During installation, team members ensured that the home remained clean by wearing shoe covers indoors, laying down floor mats and tidying up as they worked.
Before finishing up for the day, as part of Jay Moody’s commitment to sustainability, all empty equipment boxes and unused materials were taken back to our shop to be recycled.
Once the installation was completed, our technicians provided a thorough system operation demonstration to the customer. We want to be sure our clients understand how to use and maintain the system before we leave the home.
